Upselling Products on your ECommerce Site
You have probably been “upsold” products before in your life – if you’ve ever succumbed to the phrase “may I offer you an upgrade”, then you have been upsold! This is the efforts a retailer goes to to get you to buy a slightly more expensive product than you may have set out to purchase.
Upselling works surprisingly well. According to EConsultancy, upselling is 20x more effective than cross selling online. Customers often do not realise another product is available which is better, or they might be sure than a different product is the right one for them.
Are one of your items made of higher quality materials? Perhaps they have a component which is handmade? Be sure to emphasise the difference between these items and the cheaper one, ask if the customer might be considering the upgraded item.
There are two main wauys to upsell – make your upsells related to the original product, and be sensitive to the price range of the customers. Be sure to keep in mind that the upsell needs to fit the same needs as the original item, but be better! A good way to do this on your site is use the “related items” filtering at checkout to catch the attention of buyers.
